Electrical, Airflow, and Moving Parts

ENERGY STAR's checklist calls for tightening all electrical connections and measuring voltage and current on motors. It warns that faulty electrical connections can cause unsafe operation and reduce the life of major components.

The checklist also calls for lubricating all moving parts, because parts that lack lubrication cause friction in motors and increase electricity use. These small items protect the blower and motor.

ENERGY STAR notes that airflow problems can reduce a system's efficiency by up to 15 percent. Keeping filters, coils, and airflow clean directly protects both efficiency and the equipment.
